dy6o7rThese Broken Stars- Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s “The Starbound Trilogy” has been optioned for a TV series. According to Hypable, the TV adaptation of the novel will have four executive producers: actor, writer, director, and producer Eric Balfour; producer Stephanie Varella, founder with Balfour of Off the Grid Entertainment, an independent film production company; former NBC president Warren Littlefield; and Martin Berneman, founder of the entertainment management company Precision Entertainment. Balfour, who currently stars in Syfy TV’s Haven, was immediately drawn to the premise of “These Broken Starswhen two of his producing partners, Varella and Berneman, mentioned it as a possible book to adapt for TV. “These Broken Stars” is the first in a trilogy of love stories written by Kaufman and Spooner. Each novel will follow a different couple through space hence the tagline for the series being “The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.” The second novel in the series, “This Shattered World”, will be published later this year. Balfour’s thoughts are that “television is the perfect format to take the characters from this world and put them on a screen. You couldn’t do it as a movie, since there wouldn’t be enough time to watch the metamorphoses of these characters”. I personally think this would have made a better movie though. Yes, TV would provide a longer chance to develop the story, but maybe too long? Don’t get me wrong, I loved this book! It was one of my favorite reads from last year (although I have to begrudgingly admit that I only recently found out that the series follows different characters- that makes me sad and less eager to read the next books, honestly. But I will!). The huge majority of this story takes place with the two main characters, Lilac and Tarver, crossing the harsh terrain of a foreign planet that they’ve crash landed on. It’s told from their alternating POV and the strong point of this story is watching these characters, as they develop personally, and as their relationship grows. But that’s what most of it is, dialogue between the two of them and a lot of internal debate (they go through long periods of time giving each other the silent treatment). I was absolutely impressed that a novel, which only features two people for most of the story, and where nature is the biggest threat, could be so entertaining! That said, I really think this would have made a better movie. The special effects could have been killer (not that they won’t be on TV- I’m just assuming they’ll be working with a smaller budget). It just boils down to whether this story could have been told better in a 200 minute movie rather then over hours in a TV series. I’ll watch it either way and always get excited about my favorite book characters coming to life on screen.

Maze Runner- We’ve got a new image from the Maze Runner movie, thanks to the MTV movie brawl! Who’s getting excited about this movie!?

The Giver- We also got our first look at Jeff Bridges movie “The Giver”, an adaptation he’s been trying to make for over 20 years! Thanks to Harvey Weinstein we’ll finally get to see it. I just can’t wait to see all of these wonderful actors portray this story (I just LOVE Meryl Streep!)!
