The Queen of the Tearling- This “Game of Thrones-esque”series, which will debut in July, joins a gamut of YA books that are landing movie deals before the first book even hits the shelf. According to Variety, Warner Bros., Emma Watson and her Harry Potter producer David Heyman are teaming up on this adaptation with Watson attached to star. Watson will play 19-year-old idealistic princess Kelsea Glynn, created by Erika Johansen after the author heard a 2007 speech by a pre-presidential Barack Obama (Johansen signed a seven-book deal in February). It is set three centuries after an environmental catastrophe, when a malevolent Red Queen reigns over the kingdom of the Tearling. Glynn must defeat the monarch to reclaim her deceased mother’s crown, and publishers have compared the tone of the series with that of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, which is being adapted by US network HBO as “Game of Thrones”. Warner Bros, which oversaw the Harry Potter films, has acquired film rights to the entire book series. The project is in development as a director and writer still need to be found. Meanwhile, Heyman will produce along with Jeff Clifford through Heyman’s Heyday Films banner and Watson will exec produce (her first time being behind the scenes of a film). In comments made to Wonderland Magazine, Emma Watson spoke for the first time about her decision to take on the book to film adaptation: “I had kind of said I would never do a franchise again, so I was desperate to hate it. Unfortunately, I didn’t sleep for about a week because I couldn’t put the bloody thing down. It would be fair to say I became obsessed with the role and the book. Now I am executive-producing it.” The British actor recently appeared in teen drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower and has a supporting role in Sofia Coppola’s much-hyped The Bling Ring. She can be seen playing a version of herself in the dark comedy This Is the End, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s humorous apocalypse movie. Watson will also play Noah’s adopted daughter Ila in Darren Aronofsky’s forthcoming biblical epic.
Goosebumps- A movie based on the long-running children’s book series from R.L. Stine has been in the works for some time, but we’re learning now that the adaptation is closer to actually hitting theaters. Gulliver’s Travels star Jack Black has reportedly signed on to star in the ‘Goosebumps’ movie, alongside 16 year-old Israeli actress Odeya Rush, who just wrapped up filming The Giver. Black will play an author named Mr. Shivers, who writes scary stories, discovers that the creatures he wrote about are now popping off the page. His niece, played by Rush, must figure out how to fight them. Set to helm the adaptation is Monsters and Aliens director Rob Letterman, who previously directed Black in the 2010 film Gulliver’s Travels. Goosebumps was previously adapted into a TV series that aired from 1995 to 1998. The original series started with 1992’s Welcome to Dead House and various spin-off series were released, such as Give Yourself Goosebumps (similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure series) and Goosebumps Series 2000, which Stine billed as even more frightening than the original books. For some time now, fans of the series have wondered what this movie would be about (or which book they would actually be adapting), and given the broad variety of stories told within the series it seems only right that the adaptation will be taking a somewhat ‘meta’ approach.
Insurgent- We’ve known for quite some time that Divergent director Neil Burger had decided not to return for the sequel because of scheduling conflicts. Now we know who will take the reigns for Insurgent- Summit Entertainment has tapped Robert Schwentke (Red, The Time Travel’s Wife, R.I.P.D) to direct the film. The script, originally done by Brian Duffield is also being reworked by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind). Erik Feig, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s president of production said- “Robert, with whom we have already had a successful relationship, has proven a master storyteller in multiple genres and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Veronica Roth’s next installment of the Divergent series. As well, we are very happy to welcome Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman to the team as executive producers”. But some people aren’t excited about this move by Lionsgate, see the clip below.
Divergent- It’s just a little less than a month away before the March 21st release day, and everybody is getting ready including make-up giant Sephora! The “Divergent” make-up line includes palettes that come in a range of neutral colors and are great for everyday wear. It’s a pretty impressive collaboration on Sephora’s part, seeing as it’s the company’s first film make-up tie-in. The sets, which will debut next month, include the Multi-Piece Collectors Kit ($59.50), the Multi-Piece Collector’s Palette ($32.50) and a 7-Piece Nail Art Kit ($27.50), all of which derive shades and blends from the different factions that exist in the Divergent world. The most intriguing pieces are the High Pigment Eye Shadows and High Gloss Transforming Shadows that are transparent when dry, but show up translucent when wet. In a press release, the magical eyeshadows are described as “showcasing fluid, twinkling particles that look like they are suspended in air”.
In other Divergent news, the full line-up of the upcoming soundtrack has been released, as well as the first song. The full album will hit shelves March 11th.
