Cover Counts! October edition!

‘Tis that time of the season! Leaves are falling, wind is blowing and with a bit of exaggeration, the fireplaces are being lit. It’ s a perfect time to read! Plus, since we have about 3 months left in 2014, I feel like I have just enough time to catch up on my reading goal. (which, according to my Goodreads, I’m behind 4 books! Yikes!)

Here are some great books for you guys to look at!

*It’s here! The fifth and the final book to the Rick Riordan’s “The Heroes of Olympus” series. Although I’ve never been able to get into this book, people everywhere have highly anticipated the release of this book. So far, one day after its release, it has awesome reviews! So for those people who doesn’t like waiting for years for a conclusion, here is your chance to start this seemingly adventurous and epic series!

*Does any of you watch “Witches of East End?” Tiffany and I are suckers for supernatural tv shows and we stumbled into it because it was on Netflix. It turns out to be a very descent show! It kinda reminded me of “Charmed” a little bit but this has better CG, better story, and better looking people. So it is no surprise that I would love this book! and why not you? And if the witch part doesn’t convince you, the part about where she is thrust into the world of witches, ghosts, pirates, and all-too-handsome-healers might change your mind.

*Sometimes it’s inspiring to read about 12-15 year old kid’s crazy and out of the world adventures. The choices he/she has to make at such a young age makes me think about the not-so-great choices I’ve made but then I remember that it is written by a grown person and I let go of my guilt. ;-P This first book of the series “Summoner” tells a story about an apprentice blacksmith who discovers a hidden ability to summon demons from another world. Then he gets thrown into an academy of powerful nobles to train to fight a war against orcs with only his demon Ignatius for help. (reminds you a little of Bartimaeus series, anyone?)

*Putting an end to another series, “The Agency - Rivals in the city” is a Victorian woman detective novel originally published in the UK. In this fourth and last book, Mary Quinn, an independent minded woman for its time period, tires to solve a dangerous case while she hesitates the proposal from her long term love interest James Easton. It is described to be a well researched, action packed book and a perfect replacement for those who loves “Sally Lockhart” series. Here is an awesome article about how the book cover was made! Honestly, I thought it was CG but it is not! Click Here

*Summer is gone, but why should we put reading about mermaids, river witches, and sea dragons on hold?!! I was already sold with the description about them! And this amazingly beautiful cover helps a lot with the decision making. =D Enough said!

Prepare yourself with Divergent themed party! (P.S The Movie Rocks!)

Yes folks, gear up and prepare yourself to wait in line for the DIVERGENT MOVIE in less than 24 hours!! We just got back from a sneak peak and you’re going to love it! We’ve all been waiting for this, and since the unexpected failure of “Vampire Academy” “Beautiful Creatures,” or “Mortal Instruments,” I, personally needed this movie to be a success (and it was).

We’ve put together this list for those of you hosting a Divergent party tomorrow! Haha, and are last minute planners like us =)

Greet your friends with Amity Orchard Hard Cider! Bringing Up Burns has cleverly created a label to stick onto every beer bottle so that whoever drinks them would be “chillaxed.” (wink wink) If only I had time to do something similar…

Be creative and make some themed snacks. I couldn’t find who thought of this originally, but as far as I can tell, it was done at a school party for the premiere of the Divergent book. Sour candy and pop rocks for the Dauntless, honest cookies for Candor, selfless biscuits for Abnegation, and just good old cupcakes for Erudite. Amazing!

And to pump up the ambiance, why don’t you all give yourself a Divergent Quizz and see how well you know the book?

  • What does the Abnegation’s serum do?
  • Who is the leader of the Bureau?
  • Who learns that they aren’t really Divergent?
  • Where was Tobias’ (four) mom from?
  • Who volunteers to break into the weapons lab?

Hikikomori and the Rental Sister - for those who needs a break from YA romance.

14568991

I don’t know where to start my review of this book. So, let me just start from the beginning.

Please understand that this review contains MANY spoilers!

New York, US, where the whole story takes place, fictionally of course.

Thomas is a Hikikomori, or in other words a recluse- a person who withdraws himself to one place, mostly his room, but away from society. Obviously, something terrible has happened to him. His wife lives in the next room. Yes, same apartment but they’re not sharing a room together anymore. You find out soon enough that Thomas’s reason as to why he is this way is because he lost his son and blames himself entirely for it. To be completely honest, I thought it’d be something else, not that losing a child is not a big deal but I just thought it might be more… of a mystery? I guess people grieve in different ways, and the loss of a child is not a pain I ever wish to know. His wife Silke hasn’t left him. She stuck with him while talking to him between the wall/door, screaming at him, crying constantly, but mostly going about a relatively normal life for three years. Yes, he has been a Hikikomori for three years!

large

Silke’s last attempt to save their marriage, is to bring in a rental sister. A “sister” who is not a direct family member but someone who can possibly coax him out of the shell he’s created. Apparently it’s a phenomenon in Japan, a Hikikomori and a rental sister, one wouldn’t exist without the other. So Megumi, just an ordinary Japanese woman who is a clerk at a store somewhere in NY, starts to show up and talk to Thomas regularly. But she has her own deep and dark past of course. Her brother was a Hikikomori and died after being in a room for four years. She came to the US to escape everything.

Now, I understand why some people might think that this story is perverse. All three of them have issues. Thomas eventually has sex with Megumi and develops feelings for her that are totally different from the feelings he has for his wife. “A heart can love twice” he says. For him to start a new life with Megumi might be easier. Megumi, while her brother was still alive, wanted to take her brother away from his harsh reality where he was beaten up everyday for being half Japanese and half Korean. So she started to have sex for money. But her brother died before she could raise enough money to save him. She also falls for Thomas, it’s a pull that they feel for each other and honestly, I couldn’t understand it. Maybe he made her feel needed? She could save Thomas when she couldn’t save her brother? What was Silke thinking, bringing a young Japanese girl into her husband’s life? Did she know of the consequences that might happen? Was she okay with it? And Silke herself, sometimes brought men into the apartment to entice Thomas to come out and do something about it. Yes, it is all very wrong. But when I think more about it, that is what life is about. You become desperate and do anything and everything to cling on to what little hope you might have. We don’t live in a fairy tale world where you find the love of your life, your soul mate and live happily ever after. You work at a marriage, make mistakes, forgive them and move on, and sometimes move on with someone else.

hikikomori1

So, I didn’t think this book was perverse, it was just writing about what was real. Ultimately, Thomas came out of his room because of his room to try and set things right with his wife but then she attempted to kill herself by setting the apartment on fire. His instincts failed him when their son died in a car accident three years ago but this time they kicked in just in time for him to save her. Later Thomas asks Silke why she thinks they still have a chance in their marriage, what has changed? Silke says that she knew when Thomas came for her during the fire to save her life, even before their bodies hit the floor, that he chose to live and he ultimately chose their marriage, after all. Which, unfortunately, could have been her big misunderstanding since he would have left if not for Megumi’s new situation which I will explain in the next paragraph.

During the time that Megumi was falling for Thomas, she finds out that her mother, who abandoned their family to go back to Korea, was actually pregnant when she left and has since returned to Japan to start a new life. They all want her to come back to them there. She ultimately decides to go back for the sake of her little brother, who is also half Japanese and half Korean. Her decision is what decides the outcome of this book, leaving Thomas with Silke, who are now also left to try for a new beginning. Who knows what will happen to them, maybe Thomas would’ve been better off with Megumi, but we will never know.

The dust jacket of this book kind of tricked me into thinking that this was an odd love story where a relationship worked with three people in it. What I should have known is that relationships never work that way- at least not that I’ve ever known.

I don’t know what to think of them. I don’t know if I should pity them or be scared that it could so easily happen to anyone I know.

This book was written beautifully and it read like music. I can say that it was the most “REAL” book I’ve read in a long time. I will be looking forward to his next book.

Ambiguous Covers - Dare You to Find a Meaning

A cover of a book can often give us a sense of direction of its contents. It is no mystery that a book about a dragon has a dragon on the cover or for a Young Adult genre, a beautiful girl or a boy. Sometimes it expertly captures a moment from the pages like the Harry Potter series. But what if they don’t tell you anything? What are some of the most misleading book covers you have seen? Here are some of mine.

Twilight

twilight saga

Yes, this book was a phenomenon. But what is up with the covers? Did anyone know that a pair of pale hands holding a red apple meant it was going to tell a story of a vegetarian Vampire falling in love with an awkward human girl? It did not get better with book 2, 3, or 4. A “flower” for New Moon, “ribbon” for Eclipse, and “Chessboard” for Breaking Dawn? It’s as if no thought was put into this.

The Body Finder

body finder series

Another example that is quite similar, yet a very fine read- “The Body Finder” series. I am not going to lie, I picked up this book at a book store simply because of its cover. It looked beautiful, mysterious and enchanting. Frankly, it looked more to be in the genre of Science Fiction. But of course, this book is about a girl who can sense the dead from a very young age. I’ve only read the first two and I will eventually read the rest but from where I left off, she was getting involved with the police because of her ability to find deceased people. It is refreshing for a young adult fiction and the romance is quite mature and real.

Author Ellen Hopkin’s books (Impulse and Crank series)

ellen hopkins

What can I say, these book covers feel like a work of art. Each one of them screams out loud to be noticed and heard! Personally, I haven’t read any of her books since all of them seem a little depressing and too real for my taste, but most of her books are on the New York Times bestsellers list and with high recommendation from most people who have read them- I should really give her a try. Powerful covers!

Author Amelie Nothomb

mmm

Undoubtedly one of my favorite French authors. She is witty, creative, a bit scary and so FRENCH! By the way, this is her, the author on the cover, which she does for most of her books! I have yet to find another author who does this and would love it if somebody could give me other examples of such a brilliant and brave person! Unfortunately, the body language she uses on the covers don’t say much about the title nor the contents of her books. Regardless, this makes me feel like she must be a very approachable author. =)

Various

ambiguous

There are so many books out there with “ambiguous” covers. But as I was going through my bookshelf I realized, having read most of these, I didn’t really care if the title matched the covers or not. Mostly you don’t think about it afterwards- but I do like covers that are powerful, colorful and outstanding! After a while of going through my list of books to find these examples, I felt a little deceived.

We’d love to hear your opinion about a book cover that you loved but didn’t necessarily match the story! Or anything that you think it is worth adding at the end of this list! =)

Cover Reveal- Deborah Harkness, Ridley Pearson and More! Don’t Miss these Awesome Covers!

Here we have it! The cover for the third and final book of the “All Souls Trilogy” has been revealed! Unfortunately, fans of the book will have to wait until July to read it. The first book, “A Discovery of Witches” has been on my highly anticipated list for some time now but to be honest, I never found the covers to be all that catchy. Nevertheless, here is the cover that we’ve all been waiting for!

Another third installment of a promising series “Ondine”, “The Winter of Magic.” The story is about a girl who has found love within a pet ferret called “Shambles.” But the ferret is actually a boy cursed by a witch who happens to be related to the girl. When Shambles is turned back into a boy temporarily, the girl vows to break the spell and turn him back to a boy. Honestly, I am quite intrigued by this story. Plus the titles, “Summer of Shambles”, “Autumn Palace” and “Winter of Magic”. How lovely!

The next book is none other than Ridley Pearson’s 7th and final book of the “Kingdom Keepers” series. The books in this highly acclaimed Middle Grade series always come complete with covers that promise action and adventure! And without any disappointment, the cover of “The Insider” is just simply spectacular! Love it! Go Disney!

Finally, I left my favorite for last. The author is one that I have not heard of but after one look at this cover, I was mesmerized. “Fractured Steel” is about a woman named Karen Barnes who survived a bloody tour in Iraq. When she returns, there is nothing more she wants than a peaceful life surrounded by horses and mountains. But all is threatened when a stranger tries boarding a horse worth millions at her stable. Stunning cover indeed.

I was first introduced to the author Robin Lafevers by another one of her series, “Theodosia.” It is a middle grade book based in early England with an Egyptian mystery twist. I aodred her wit and adventures, couldn’t get enough of it. I was extremely excited to find out that the author was writing a YA genre series! His Fair Assassin. From the title and the dust cover it reminded me a lot of “Poison Studies” by Maria V. Snyder. I took precautions and careful measures before reading this book, like waiting for the second book of the series to come out before launching myself into the story and not to be over excited just so I won’t get too disappointed. This is what I do when I know I’m going to read a great series. Wink wink.

Ismae bears the scar from when her mother tried to get rid of her from her womb. But her survival only proved to her father that she was sired by the god of death himself. She was abused all her life by her father and now she is being sold like a farm animal to another man. When she is given a chance to a new life, she takes it without another thought. Ismae is brought to an abyss where girls like her are trained to carry out the orders from the god of death. You can tell already how this story goes, Ismae finds herself in a situation where she has to carry out her duties while falling in love with her enemy/conspirator. There is no mystery there but the plot is worthy of a thriller. Robin Lafevers did not fail to deliver a story where you are torn between her wanting revenge on all man kind or finding true love and finally have a happy ending. The story is spiced with political injustice, backstabbing jerks and camaraderie between friends.

Ismae struggles to stay faithful to her sisters, and to her “father” who sired her and believes with her whole heart that she is doing the right thing. (It’s amazing what people can do when they fully believe they are doing the right thing…) She is brave but yet fragile when faced with her demons, humble and loving to all women. (Yes, she is a feminist. lol) All in all, it was a very enjoyable book.

or so I thought…

Now, this is the part where I get frustrated. I don’t know how many of you out there are thinking this, but YA books has increasingly become series rather than a stand alone book. Since I have waited for quite a long time for at least two of the books to be published, I felt like a fool when I realized that the second book has a different main character. It’s one thing when authors decide to write a spin off series for another character but a whole different story when it’s done within the series!! The same thing for “Graceling,” “The Warrior Heir,” “Perfect Chemistry” etc. I enjoy them alright, but it always leaves me wanting more.

Enough of this banter and on with a more joyful news! We are having GIVEAWAYS! From next week till the end of this year, we are giving away many AWESOME books we got from BEA 2013 and more! Some of the titles include “Teardrop” by Lauren Kate, “Something Strange and Deadly” by Susan Dennard, “Alice in Zombieland” by Gena Showalter, “The Eye of Minds” by James Dashner and so much more! So don’t miss out on any of them!

See you all soon! =D

Curse Workers series review

My first Holly Black series! As you might know, she is mostly famous for her “Spiderwick Chronicles.” Having seen the movie already, and have it concluded in such a way that I didn’t really thrive to know anything more, I have decided to something else she wrote. With her imagination, I figured I’d enjoy anything she’d write. And Boy Was I Right!

Let me be the first to say that this book was not at all what I expected it to be. Yes, it is fiction and yes, it is young adult genre but it is told from a male’s POV and although it has “magic” in the story, the plot is more driven by its puzzles and thrills of seeking out the bad guy. So, I guess it is a crime/mystery/young adult fiction. It was exactly what I needed.

Review -

Cassel Sharpe comes from a family of curse workers within a world where people like them are regarded as dangerous and avoided. But Cassel himself is not one of them, so he became the next best thing, a con artist. I was surprised of this family’s dynamics, wait a second, no, I was appaled. Not only was his mother in prison, but his grandfather was a “death worker” who worked with the most terrifying crime family in town, his father is long gone and his two brothers mistreated him ALL the time!

One day he finds the white cat that haunts his dreams, and like many other mystery novels, it all starts from there. He unravels a secret he didn’t even know he had. Half this book is about Cassel’s desire to fit into his worker family as a con artist, and the other half is making amends of the mistakes he didn’t even know he made. (most of them being immensely helped by his two older brothers) He is witty, smart and naively romantic, a sure heartthrob if he was any older in the book.

This book is a fine treasure among the young adult genre, and a great read during summer if you are looking for that page turner while lying on a beach soaking yourself in the sun. I would LOVE to read more about him!

Favorite quote

We are, largely, who we remember ourselves to be. That’s why habits are so hard to break. If we know ourselves to be liars, we expect not to tell the truth. If we think of ourselves as honest, we try harder.

May I just say, that it was the right decision to have changed the cover from this!

Cover reveals of this month

Even with weather being stuffy, hot and rainy, we are getting more and more excited everyday with Book Expo America 2013 only a week away! Tiffany has been going there for years but as for me, it will be my first visit. I don’t have to tell you, as fellow book lovers yourselves, just how much this excites me! But before we get to the good stuff about authors and books we meet at BEA, here are some great YA book covers that were revealed recently. Enjoy!

I think it is safe to say that Tiffany and I are both very excited about the new cover of “Allegiant,” the third and THE FINAL book of the Divergent series. We are also excited that Veronica Roth is coming to Book Expo America 2013, Friday, May 31 for one of the event that is called “Author’s Breakfasts.” And we have the tickets to see her in person! Who knows? She might be giving out signed copies of Allegiant!

Allegiant: Expected publication October 22, 2013

I am very excited to announce Simone Elkeles’s new book called “Wild Cards,” it is about a boy who lives with his stepmother while his father is deployed. He cannot wait the day he gets to live on his own and to be involved in another family’s drama is last on his mind. Simone Elkeles is a master when it comes to laying out and solving dramas in chronological order. Although I am not too happy with the cover, the content should not be disappointing.

Wild Cards: Expected publication October 1, 2013

Another third and THE FINAL book to a series is Marie Lu’s Legend. I’ve read this book almost right after Divergent, which is why they both got jumbled in my head and disappeared altogether from my memories. But the cover as always, is quite catching!

Champion: Expected publication November 5, 2013

Sophie Jordan’s new series “Uninvited,” not only has a stunning cover but also has a very intriguing story! It’s about a girl who lives in a society/world where people are defined by their genes. And Davy, (original yet weird just like all the names she used for Firelight series) is tested positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome, aka “the killing gene.” I love the premises, only time will tell.
Uninvited: Expected publication March 2014

Last but not least, the sequel cover for “The darkest mind” series, Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken. Although this series has amazing review on all the book reviewing sites, the cover of the first book was not appealing to me at all. I think not many people did since the first and the second cover doesn’t relate to each other at all!

Never Fade: Expected publication October 15, 2013

Hope you all enjoyed looking through these covers as much as we did! Fingers crossed for all these books to be just as amazing as their covers!

Review of Firelight series by Sophie Jordan

“Firelight,” a wonderful and a delight of a title if you ask me. And to think that it tells a story about dragons! Needless to say, I was a bit excited. Any significant series that I know of that are based on dragons is the “Eragon” series, but I never developed the taste for it. Many Young Adult books has written countless books on ‘vampires’ ‘werewolves’ ‘angels’ and even ‘fairies.’ It’s about time someone picked other magical species, like DRAGONS!

Firelight, Vanished, Hidden by Sophie Jordan 3.5/5 stars

The story flows as though you are drinking a decent red wine when you are already tipsy. You know, when you know that the wine is good since you’ve been drinking all night but after you are a bit tipsy, you wouldn’t notice a difference between a $50 bottle and a $8 dollar bottle? The story felt like that to me. As usual, I didn’t have much expectation but the world itself was pretty fascination and the author’s description of her dragons was quite beautiful. So, I got sucked into it. But soon enough, I found flaws and annoying side characters as well as main characters. But it was just soooo easy to read through it all!! Which is why I finished all three books in about a week!

*this review may contain spoilers*

Jacinda is a VERY rare fire breather even among her kind. She is treasured but protected in the most twisted way. As a teenage dragon who loves to fly, she rebels. She is quite self righteous and won’t stick with a plan for five whole seconds. She falls in love the worst possible guy and puts everybody she loves in danger. (no surprise there)

Will is a dragon hunter. He finds the human form of Jacinda irresistible as well as the dragon. He has more than a handful of secrets himself including his whole family and no doubt the prince charming of this story. A loner at heart until he found Jacinda, now he just won’t leave her alone.

Cassian the next leader of the dragon clan, is not much introduced in the first book. But he makes his presence from the second. He is big, tall and powerful, he always thought he would be mated with Jacinda, thus making him a worthy opponent of Will. (a character I pity the most in this series…)

Tamra, Jacinda’s TWIN sister, totally caught me off guard. So, I won’t say much but I would’ve like to read more about her.

These four main characters mingle very nicely throughout the story. Sophie Jordan writes it in a way that a reader could imagine at least a dozen outcomes and never a dull moment. Also all three books reads like a whole story instead of having months in between books. Although I have questions unanswered, (that’s only because I pick at ever little things! lol) I would recommend these books to anyone who is in need of a fast and furious read!

Review on The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

It’s already April and personally, I haven’t had enough of Winter to let it get away.

I mean, the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom in Washington D.C., which means I’m pretty much going to have to live with the fact that Spring is coming… Whether I like it or not. It’s not that I don’t like Spring, I just wish I could have seen more snow this year. Field covered with fresh snow that it hurts to look at it directly kind of snow, half your leg is stuck in snow that you can’t move kind of snow, making a snow man and his family kind of snow, and of course, streets are too slippery you can’t go to work/school kind of snow. =D

So, I tried to compensate the loss I felt with a good book that reminded me of Winter.

“The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey

“5 STARTS!”

Let me just start off by saying that it is a great book. But if you are the kind of person who gets crazy with ambiguous endings, you might not like this book at all.

The story is based on a Russian fairy tale, an elderly couple who cannot have children of their own builds a child out of snow, the next day the child comes to life and soon she becomes their center of everything. They say the fairy tale has many different endings and the author has chosen to leave us with a conclusion of our own.

The background of it all is not that different, two couple who has already suffered from a loss of a child decides to move to Alaska, away from family and friends. At first they are distant, indifferent to each other. But when the first snow came, it was like a new beginning. They make a child out of snow, a girl. Now, you don’t have to be a detective to know that this girl they made out of snow, becomes a child in flesh and blood the next day.

The book is divided into three sections.

First, it’s all about the dynamics of the couple, how they came to be. The narrative also goes back and forth from wife to husband which makes readers understand a whole lot better of what’s going on both of their minds.

Second, they both have very different sentiment for the girl. Wife, who thinks that she is a “snow maiden,” from a book her father read to her when she was a little girl and grateful for the fact that she has something to love again. Husband, who has seen the other side of this girl and thinks of her as nothing but a lost child and mourns for her. It portrayed two sides almost perfectly and when they finally shared with each other of what they knew of the child, the collision was so real yet troublesome.

Third, a new narrative is introduced, which I thought it was the weirdest part of the book. The Snow Child, at this point, gave me wonder as to if she was a real person? or a snow maiden? And it worried me to think that there won’t be a perfect ending for this story after all. Also it was by this point that I thought I would be okay either way.

The story is written so poetically at times that I kept reading the same sentence over and over again. It draws you in deeply and forcefully like the white snow in the mountains and makes you feel like you are the only person in the world when you are reading it. I teared up many times during the story, felt the heart squeeze itself from time to time. I recommend this book for all those who already misses the Winter and an adult fairy tale.

————————

(a passage or two from the book)

All her life she had believed in something more, in the mystery that shape-shifted at the edge of her senses. It was the flutter of moth wings on glass and the promise of river nymphs in the dappled creek beds. It was the smell of oak trees on the summer evening she fell in love, and the way dawn threw itself across the cow pond and turned the water to light.

I remember with some shame that the rest of us teased you about seeing such spirits, but now my own grandchildren chase similar fancies and I do not discourage them. In my old age, I see that life itself is often more fantastic and terrible than the stories we believe as children, and that perhaps there is no harm in finding magic among the trees.

She had thought often of Ada’s words about inventing new endings to stories and choosing joy over sorrow. In recent years she had decided her sister had been in part wrong. Suffering and death and loss were inescapable. And yet, what Ada had written about joy was entirely true. When she stands before you with her long, naked limbs and her mysterious smile, you must embrace her while you can.
