Lots of YA-Adaptation News! Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Wicked Lovely & Much More!!

Wicked Lovely: According to Deadline, Melissa Marr ‘s novel has conjured up a second wind- Originally set up at Universal by Wild West Picture Show Productions, the project is now freed up and WWPSP has brought in indie production house Pukeko Pictures to produce and oversee special effects, and Weta Workshop for design and physical effects. They will set a director shortly and then CAA will shop the project. WWPSP’s Vince Vaughn, Valeri Vaughn and Peter Billingsley are producing with Pukeko’s Martin Baynton and Adam Fratto, and Richard Taylor is exec producing.

Chaos Walking: Great news! Well sorta in the way that “no news is good news”! Even after a year of no word, this one is not dead in the water… yet! Chaos Walking is getting a new writer. These folks said it best: “News about Lionsgate’s Young Adult adaptation Chaos Walking is currently arriving in annual instalments. In mid-2012 we learned that Charlie Kaufman was writing the screenplay, and last September came word that Robert Zemeckis was aboard to direct. This year’s update is that Kaufman’s work has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been deemed not quite the ticket for a would-be franchise (we can only imagine what the writer of Adaptation and Synecdoche, New York did with the material)”. The latest scribe to take a crack at Patrick Ness’ novel will be Jamie Linden. We’ll see…

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children: Things are moving full steam ahead for MPHPC! Director Tim Burton is staying true to his MO and casting familiar faces for this upcoming quirky project. Latest news is that Eva Green is in negotiations with Fox to work alongside Burton; they previously worked together on the supernatural fantasy “Dark Shadows”. Asa Butterfield is also in talks to star in the film, which would make the fourth bestselling book adaptation for the young star. Right now, no offer has be made, but one is expected to be made soon.

A Monster Calls: Unlike the majority of movie adaptations we talk about here, Patrick Ness’ award children’s book has been moving at hyper-speed toward the big screen ever since Focus Features bought the rights last March. Latest news has Sigourney Weaver joining Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson on the project under the direction of Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible). The movie is set to hit theaters in North America on Oct. 14, 2016.

Let it Snow: After this summer’s success of “The Fault in Our Stars”, studios are scooping up John Green’s works right and left, including “Let it Snow” which features short stories from Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. According to Hypable, The book was released in 2008 and features three different but connected stories of teens in a Christmastime blizzard, and the three stories are “tales of love, romance, and breathtaking kisses.”

Soulkeepers: G.P. Ching’s six-book series has been option by producer Aaron Magnani. According to the Wrap, Heaven and Hell wage a war for human souls. A teenager named Jacob becomes an unlikely hero as he realizes he has the genetic predisposition to be a Soulkeeper — a gifted warrior with the power to protect humans from fallen angels. The only problem is that he’s a hot-headed vandal and a skeptic. It’ll take a beautiful neighbor who’s more than what she seems to teach him the truth about faith, loyalty, love and redemption.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone: For those of us who just can’t wait to see this adaptation come to life, here’s the latest word from the author in an interview with Hypable:

Hypable: Can you give us an update on the Daughter of Smoke and Bone movie? There are some new screenwriters attached, who did The Fault in Our Stars?

Laini Taylor: They did a draft, and I have just done another draft after theirs, which the studio has now. So fingers crossed. There’s been difficulties, it’s just really different. It’s interesting for me, having had the opportunity to re-conceive the story, to tell the same story in a different way. There’s so many layers that are too complex exposition to try and put in a movie. If a version of this screenplay does get made, I feel like it’ll still feel like the same story, but there will obviously be a lot of differences, just things that you can’t fit into an hour and a half movie.

Hypable: Can you talk about any of those changes in particular?

LT: No, I better not. I’m not sure what will happen with the script or where it will go from here. It’s just simplification I guess. I don’t think it would feel very different – it was fun, it was fun to do it. I think if I had tried to do it two years ago it would have been harder. The more I see the process of adaptation, the more I’m able to see the film as its own thing, and what to take from the book to create something new, versus trying to jam the whole book into the film.

Disney’s Live Action: Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast: After the success of Maleficent earlier this summer, Disney is moving forward with their plan of turning our favorite animated princess movies into live action fairy tales. First, for those who saw Maleficent, you might have noticed the teaser trailer for Cinderella (I’ve included the short clip below). Here’s what know so far: Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film is set to be released March 13, 2015 and will star Lily James, Cate Blanchett and Richard Madden. Second, Beauty and the Beast is also in the works, which will be directed by Bill Condon. Evan Spiliotopoulos is writing the script with Mandeville Films producing.

Monstrumologist: According to Deadline, Rick Yancey’s 4 book young adult horror series has been optioned by Warner Bros. The first book in the series, Monstrumologist, was published in 2009 and the final book came out last year. The story follows Will Henry, an orphaned assistant to Dr. Pellinore Warthorpe, a man with a most unusual specialty: monstrumology, the study of monsters. Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments) has been set to adapt under producers Ellen Goldsmith and Vein Robert Teitel- Eric Robinson and George Tillman Jr will be exec producers.

Maze Runner Sequel- The Scorch Trials: Upon the decent box office success of The Maze Runner, based on the James Dashner YA trilogy, Fox has announced that it will move forward with a sequel (good news in light of other YA adaptations these days). Wes Ball, who directed the first, will be back alongside star Dylan O’Brien. So far, newcomers will include Aidan Gillen, who plays Game of Thrones character Littlefinger, to play the villain in Scorch Trials.

YA Movies- Another Adaptation for John Green- Plus Eleanor & Park, The Here and Now and MORE!

Movie Mondays

This week for Movie Monday, we have SO many WONDERFUL updates for you! Eight new adaptations, that’s right EIGHT, include: Eleanor & Park, The Here and Now, a Harry Potter Spinoff, Significance, The Outliers, Olivia Kidney, Paper Towns and UnRemembered. There’s also been some casting news for The 5th Wave and Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (whoop whoop)! And the most exciting part- new trailers! Yeahhh!!! We’ve got If I Stay, The Giver Featurette and The Maze Runner! And of course some other fun stuff in between =) Enjoy!

15745753Eleanor & Park- This off-beat indie read has stolen spots on almost every major list for the best YA books of 2013. So it should come as no surprise that a movie deal would shortly follow. According to Entertainment Weekly, DreamWorks Studios will be giving Rainbow Rowell’s bestselling novel its cinematic treatment, citing that they were drawn to the teenage love story for the same reason as its legions of fans. “It’s not the typical story where the ugly duckling is in love with the hot guy,” says Holly Bario, DreamWorks president of production. “They’re both trying to find their way. They’re both outcasts.”

The Here and Now- Hot on the heels of the release of her latest YA novel, Ann Brashares shared via Twitter that the movie rights to The Here and Now have been scooped up by Alcon Entertainment, Alloy Entertainment, and Kira Davis’ 8:38 Productions, according to Bustle. For this project she’ll be rejoining the same producers behind the movie adaptations of her hit series, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. However, The Here and Now is nothing like Brashares sweet, coming of age tale that we saw before- this fast-paced action and sci-fi plot seems ripe for the big screen. And it’s no surprise that with the success of female-driven, YA action movies, such as Catching Fire and Divergent, producers are jumping on Brashares’s novel.

Harry Potter Spinoff- Harry Potter fans can rejoice as news that their favorite wizarding world will be back after J.K Rowling revealed that her 2001 book, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, will form part of a new epic trilogy. Fantastic Beasts was referenced in the Harry Potter Series several times, but it was Comic Relief that made the book a reality. As a gift to the BBC charity, J.K Rowling wrote the book based on magical creatures and a separate book on Quidditch called Quidditch Through The Ages, the combined sales raised over £17 million for charity. And of course the cameo rumors are flying high! Even though Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have been quoted saying they would not reprise their old roles again but that doesn’t rule out the potential for them to do cameos! Either way, the Harry Potter spin-off should definitely be a box office hit and bring fans to theaters. J.K Rowling will pen the script for what Warner Bros. CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, describes as 3 “megamovies”.

The 5th Wave- The recent 5th Wave movie casting news has been buzzing all over the web lately, with Sony Studios announcement that Chloë Grace Moretz will take the lead. The talented young starlet, who is also starring in this year’s adaptation of If I Stay, will play Cassie Sullivan in the adaptation of Rick Yancey’s hit sci-fi thriller The 5th Wave. The screenplay for the film will be written by Susannah Grant, who got an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film Erin Brockovich, so it seems like the screenplay is in good hands. The film will be directed by J. Blakeson who is best known for his film The Disappearance of Alice Creed, which received a Certified Fresh rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, so this film has some huge talent behind it. Chloë Grace Moretz has given many amazing performances as seen in Oscar-winning film Hugo, which won the Saturn Award (2011) for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, and a kick-ass performance in Kick-Ass.

If I Stay- Speaking of Chloe Moretz- she let us know via Instagram that they would be releasing the much anticipated trailer for If I Stay courtesy of MTV. And here we have it- fair warning, you may wanna grab some tissues!

Significance- According to Red Carpet Endings, author Shelly Crane took to her blog recently to update fans on the status of Significance, a pending TV show based off her books. Actors currently cast are Jeremy Sumpter as Caleb and Michael Welch (Marcus in Twilight). The book was originally optioned as a movie and then, after some thought, the production company decided TV made more sense. However, they are still in the very early stages with this project, so we’ll just have to wait and see. If you haven’t read the book yet (it’s a magical/ superpowers/ teen-romance tale), you should check it out because right now it’s free on Kindle!

The Outliers- Yet another YA series joins the list of “yet-to-be-published” (written?) books getting film treatment! Lionsgate is sticking to what they do best and are preparing to push The Outliers, Kimberly McCreight’s upcoming 2015 series starter, as the next big thing. According to The Wrap Reese Witherspoon is developing the project, which is about a girl named Wylie who has always had great instincts but dismissed them as nothing more until her best friend went missing. She finds Cassie in a remote spot in the woods with a group called the Outliers, who claim to be able to harness “intuition” and turn it into a powerful psychological weapon called EQ Transference. Bewitched by the utopia they seem to have created, and thrilled to be surrounded by people like her, Wylie joins the Outliers. But within days, she finds herself running for her life. Wylie doesn’t know it, but she has the potential to become the most powerful Reader of all. There are many who would go to great lengths to destroy her, and she can’t trust anyone – least of all, the Outliers.

1269234

Olivia Kidney- According to Broadway World Moonbot Studios has announced that it will acquire film rights to Olivia Kidney, the award-winning young adult trilogy written by Ellen Potter. Moonbot plans to develop Olivia’s Alice in Wonderland-like adventures as a live action film with significant animation sequences. “At Moonbot, we’re grabbing for magic and Olivia Kidney has captivated us,” said William Joyce, Moonbot co-founder and author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. “Ellen Potter has crafted a unique and enchanting fantasy that we can’t wait to bring to life as a film”.

6442769

Paper Towns- According to Deadline, after completing its adaptation of the John Green novel The Fault In Our Stars, Fox 2000 has made a deal for the 2008 Green novel Paper Towns, and it is working on bringing back together not only the producers and the screenwriters for another go but also one of the stars. Paper Towns will be built around actor-singer Nat Wolff, who co-stars in The Fault In Our Stars and stars in the upcoming Palo Alto. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are going to adapt, and Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing. The scribes will be exec producers along with Green. Fox will release the Josh Boone-directed The Fault In Our Stars on June 6, with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort starring with Wolff.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, # 1)

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children- Ransom Riggs, author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, announced via his official tumblr that an open casting call has begun for the character of Jacob, the male protagonist of the novel. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will be directed by Tim Burton and is scheduled to begin filming in London, this August.

UnRemembered- According to The Hollywood Reporter, Unremembered, the first book in a YA trilogy by Jessica Brody, has been acquired by Reliance Entertainment and Kintop Pictures. The planned trilogy follows a teen who finds herself floating in the ocean, following a plane crash, with no memory of her past. Deepak Nayar and Tabrez Noorani of Tamasha Talkies, who have experience producing YA adaptions such as the Vampire Academy and the Graceling trilogy, and Soumya Sundaresh of Citrusmuse are attached to produce. Check out this exclusive interview with the author by Red Carpet Endings!

The Giver Trailer- Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to check out the trailer for The Giver yet, but it looks pretty epic! Here’s the newest release from Jeff Bridges, a black and white featurette that made loyal fans of the book very happy! (I’ll attach the theatrical trailer beneath, just in case you missed it at the Divergent release).

The Maze Runner Trailer- And in case you missed this one- it looks so so so good! I’m reading this NEXT!

Adaptation News- “The Queen of the Tearling” & “Goosebumps”!

This week’s Movie Monday includes: Emma Watson to star in The Queen of the Tearling, a new YA book adaptation. Goosebumps gets closer to hitting theaters, with Jack Black and Odeya Rush on board to star in the film! Robert Schwentke is set to helm Insurgent, while Akiva Goldsman does a script re-write. And finally, the wonderful new make-up line that Sephora is releasing inspired by Divergent, as well as a full list of the movie soundtrack! As always, be sure and check out our list of 60+ YA books heading to Hollywood!

Movie Mondays

The Queen of the Tearling- This “Game of Thrones-esque”series, which will debut in July, joins a gamut of YA books that are landing movie deals before the first book even hits the shelf. According to Variety, Warner Bros., Emma Watson and her Harry Potter producer David Heyman are teaming up on this adaptation with Watson attached to star. Watson will play 19-year-old idealistic princess Kelsea Glynn, created by Erika Johansen after the author heard a 2007 speech by a pre-presidential Barack Obama (Johansen signed a seven-book deal in February). It is set three centuries after an environmental catastrophe, when a malevolent Red Queen reigns over the kingdom of the Tearling. Glynn must defeat the monarch to reclaim her deceased mother’s crown, and publishers have compared the tone of the series with that of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, which is being adapted by US network HBO as “Game of Thrones”. Warner Bros, which oversaw the Harry Potter films, has acquired film rights to the entire book series. The project is in development as a director and writer still need to be found. Meanwhile, Heyman will produce along with Jeff Clifford through Heyman’s Heyday Films banner and Watson will exec produce (her first time being behind the scenes of a film). In comments made to Wonderland Magazine, Emma Watson spoke for the first time about her decision to take on the book to film adaptation: “I had kind of said I would never do a franchise again, so I was desperate to hate it. Unfortunately, I didn’t sleep for about a week because I couldn’t put the bloody thing down. It would be fair to say I became obsessed with the role and the book. Now I am executive-producing it.” The British actor recently appeared in teen drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower and has a supporting role in Sofia Coppola’s much-hyped The Bling Ring. She can be seen playing a version of herself in the dark comedy This Is the End, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s humorous apocalypse movie. Watson will also play Noah’s adopted daughter Ila in Darren Aronofsky’s forthcoming biblical epic.

Goosebumps- A movie based on the long-running children’s book series from R.L. Stine has been in the works for some time, but we’re learning now that the adaptation is closer to actually hitting theaters. Gulliver’s Travels star Jack Black has reportedly signed on to star in the ‘Goosebumps’ movie, alongside 16 year-old Israeli actress Odeya Rush, who just wrapped up filming The Giver. Black will play an author named Mr. Shivers, who writes scary stories, discovers that the creatures he wrote about are now popping off the page. His niece, played by Rush, must figure out how to fight them. Set to helm the adaptation is Monsters and Aliens director Rob Letterman, who previously directed Black in the 2010 film Gulliver’s Travels. Goosebumps was previously adapted into a TV series that aired from 1995 to 1998. The original series started with 1992’s Welcome to Dead House and various spin-off series were released, such as Give Yourself Goosebumps (similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure series) and Goosebumps Series 2000, which Stine billed as even more frightening than the original books. For some time now, fans of the series have wondered what this movie would be about (or which book they would actually be adapting), and given the broad variety of stories told within the series it seems only right that the adaptation will be taking a somewhat ‘meta’ approach.

Insurgent- We’ve known for quite some time that Divergent director Neil Burger had decided not to return for the sequel because of scheduling conflicts. Now we know who will take the reigns for Insurgent- Summit Entertainment has tapped Robert Schwentke (Red, The Time Travel’s Wife, R.I.P.D) to direct the film. The script, originally done by Brian Duffield is also being reworked by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind). Erik Feig, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s president of production said- “Robert, with whom we have already had a successful relationship, has proven a master storyteller in multiple genres and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Veronica Roth’s next installment of the Divergent series. As well, we are very happy to welcome Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman to the team as executive producers”. But some people aren’t excited about this move by Lionsgate, see the clip below.

Divergent- It’s just a little less than a month away before the March 21st release day, and everybody is getting ready including make-up giant Sephora! The “Divergent” make-up line includes palettes that come in a range of neutral colors and are great for everyday wear. It’s a pretty impressive collaboration on Sephora’s part, seeing as it’s the company’s first film make-up tie-in. The sets, which will debut next month, include the Multi-Piece Collectors Kit ($59.50), the Multi-Piece Collector’s Palette ($32.50) and a 7-Piece Nail Art Kit ($27.50), all of which derive shades and blends from the different factions that exist in the Divergent world. The most intriguing pieces are the High Pigment Eye Shadows and High Gloss Transforming Shadows that are transparent when dry, but show up translucent when wet. In a press release, the magical eyeshadows are described as “showcasing fluid, twinkling particles that look like they are suspended in air”.

Catfish duo to Direct YA Movie “Nerve”! “Red Rising” & “Noggin” Get Optioned- New “Divergent”Trailer!

Movie Monday- We’ve got some exciting adaptation news and updates for you this week! Two new books are making their way to the big screen; “Red Rising”, by Pierce Brown and “Noggin”, by John Corey Whaley. Lionsgate announced directors to helm their next YA project, “Nerve”, by Jeanne Ryan, while “Pride, Prejudice and Zombies” nears production. Be sure and check out the latest (and final) Divergent trailer below, which aired last week on Jimmy Kimmel!! It’s pretty amazing!

Vampire Academy- As most of you know, Vampire Academy hit the theaters last weekend, with dismal box office results. Stay tuned for our take on the film, along with some yummy pictures, on Wednesday! But if you’re debating on whether or not to see it before then, we say go! Fans of the book will enjoy it and the box office isn’t really a good reflection on the movie! It’s no Hunger Games but much better than TMI and Beautiful Creatures!

Nerve- Lionsgate has hired Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman to helm the film adaptation of Jeanne Ryan’s young-adult novel “Nerve”. The book, which was published in 2012, is about a high school student named Vee, who gets involved in an intense and provocative online game of truth or dare, where watchers get to vote and comment. The story quickly escalates and becomes dangerous as her online popularity rises, and she ends up finding herself in a life or death situation. Jessica Sharzer, a writer and exec producer on American Horror Story, has written a screenplay.

Red Rising- After a huge 7 figure bidding war for the movie rights to series debut Red Rising, Universal Studios prevailed. The first book in The Red Rising Trilogy hit shelves late January, but it seems that the studio is moving full steam ahead with the project- an obvious attempt to get a piece of the Dystopian pie. The story, by newbie author Pierce Brown, is a futuristic-dystopian piece, set in a desolate world on Mars where people must survive a rigorous class system that thrives on oppression and secrecy. Earth is uninhabitable and Darrow, the main character, is a Helldiver- one of a thousand men and women who have lived for generations in the vast caves beneath the surface of Mars mining a precious resource in hopes of terraforming the planet. Then Darrow learns that the whole thing is all a lie- Mars is habitable and has been inhabited for generations by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. The Golds regard Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, AKA “Reds”, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought. With the help of a mysterious group of rebels, Darrow disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. Overseeing production is Joe Roth, Palak Patel and Renee Wolfe who have already brought World War Z director, Marc Forster, on board to helm the film. Author Pierce Brown will adapt the script.

Noggin- Summit Entertainment has landed the movie rights for upcoming YA novel Noggin, by John Corey Whaley, which will hit shelves this April. According to Deadline, the story is about 16 year old Travis Coates, who agrees to be cryogenically frozen, Ted Williams style, for as long as it takes for medical science to be able to cure the disease that is killing him. He wakes up just five years later and finds his head grafted onto the body of someone else. He’s still 16, but discovers life has moved on without him. Seeing that his friends have grown up and his life love is engaged to someone else, he tries to find a way to build a new life, even if new scars are inevitable. Jamie Linden, known for scripting We Are Marshall, adapting the Nicholas Sparks novel Dear John, and made his directing debut with Ten Years, starring Channing Tatum, will both write the script and direct this project! Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen’s Temple Hill Entertainment will produce.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies- To be honest, I thought this Seth Grahame-Smith mash up was a dead project (especially after the disaster that was Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter). This adaptation has been in development limbo- first option five years ago and then passed around from one semi-interested person to the next. Then last May, when the David O. Russell-penned script (American Hustle) landed with director Burr Steers (Charlie St. Cloud), with actress Lily Collins on board to star- but given the pass, we weren’t holding our breath. Seems like we were needlessly doubtful because the project is in fact now moving full steam ahead and apparently gearing up to start production! Darko Entertainment, Natalie Portman’s Handsomecharlie Films, and producer Allison Shearmur are already on board with the project, which was originally set up at Lionsgate. The story is a retelling of Jane Austen‘s classic. It’s set in an alternate universe wherein a zombie epidemic has taken over. The heroine is Elizabeth Bennet, an independent young woman finding love and fighting the undead in the English countryside. The news, from Slashfilm, that the cast is falling into place and that they are close to starting production, is pretty vague, but at least more of a promise than we’ve had up until this point!

Divergent- The world premier of the new and final trailer was revealed last week on Jimmy Kimmel! FINALLY!! This trailer should clear things up for those who haven’t read the book! I’ve heard lots of complaints from people who haven’t read Divergent, groaning “what this movie all about? And why should I care”? I’ve even been with friends watching the trailer in theaters whose eyes just glaze over. I sorta got it, if I hadn’t read the books, I’m not sure if I’d get what the movie was supposed to be about from the trailers I’ve seen so far— but no more! Now everyone else can get excited about this movie with us!! I think this trailer is fab and I can’t wait wait wait for March 21st!! (Click refresh if the videos don’t appear at first).

But First they ziplined in-

And they rest of that interview for your enjoyment-

Insurgent- With all of the excitement of the “Divergent” premier, just around the corner, movie makers are gearing up for the next installment of what they’re hoping will be the next big franchise! Lionsgate announced production on Insurgent will begin this May. They also announced that oscar winning screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman is coming on board to rewrite/work on the script, initially written by Brian Duffield. They have yet to name the director for the film, after announcing in December that Neil Burger had scheduling conflicts and would be moving to the role of producer. “Insurgent” is scheduled to come out on March 20, 2015, and “Allegiant” on March 18, 2016. Following the successes of Summit’s five “Twilight” films and Lionsgate’s first two “Hunger Games” pics, the now joint studios seem to have nailed a strategy to lead in the young-adult genre.

The Giver- Check out this article by the Christian Science Monitor, where they discuss how the movie will be different from the book!

The Maze Runner- Check out these new movie stills! And these as well! Are you getting excited!?

“The Fault in Our Stars” Official Trailer, “Divergent” Soundtrack News, “Catching Fire” DVD and More!

Movie Monday- In this weeks Movie Monday we’ve got the official theatrical trailer for The Fault in Our Stars! We’ve also got the music video of the -currently only released- first song for the Divergent soundtrack, as well as a clip of Ellie Goulding talking about her role in the movie and music. We’ve also got news about when the Catching Fire DVD will hit shelves and some news about the Daughter of Smoke and Bone adaptation. As always, for a full list of 60+ YA books heading to Hollywood, check out our post here!

WebDaughter of Smoke and Bone- Laini Taylor’s hit series is making some headway towards the big screen. Most recently naming director Michael Gracey to helm the film- Here’s a little summary: National Book Award finalist (2009), author Laini Taylor hit a home run with her debut book- which found its way, a mere 3 months after its release, to both Amazon’s Top 10 list of Editor Picks and Publishers Weekly Best Books for 2011. This trilogy is full of excitement, magic and all-things-supernatural! It’s about an art student in Prague, with electric blue hair, who hangs out with half-human, half-animal creatures and ends up finding herself at the center of an otherworldly, supernatural war. Movie-makers just couldn’t wait to get their hands on this one and Universal Pictures wound up landing the worldwide rights. They have Joe Roth and Palak Patel (Snow White and the Huntsman) producing the film and Stuart Beattie (G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra) to pen the adaptation. In December, 2013, Michael Gracey, a former animator turned commercials director, closed a deal to direct the film. This is great news! After a studio names a director, things usually start moving pretty quick in a forward motion!

The Fault in Our Stars- Arriving in theaters on June 6, “The Fault in Our Stars”, based on John Green’s bestselling novel, stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel Lancaster and Augustus Waters. The two fall in love after meeting at a support group for teens with cancer. This is going to be a tearjerker y’all!

Here’s a shorter Teaser Trailer-

dy6o7rThese Broken Stars- Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s “The Starbound Trilogy” has been optioned for a TV series. According to Hypable, the TV adaptation of the novel will have four executive producers: actor, writer, director, and producer Eric Balfour; producer Stephanie Varella, founder with Balfour of Off the Grid Entertainment, an independent film production company; former NBC president Warren Littlefield; and Martin Berneman, founder of the entertainment management company Precision Entertainment. Balfour, who currently stars in Syfy TV’s Haven, was immediately drawn to the premise of “These Broken Starswhen two of his producing partners, Varella and Berneman, mentioned it as a possible book to adapt for TV. “These Broken Stars” is the first in a trilogy of love stories written by Kaufman and Spooner. Each novel will follow a different couple through space hence the tagline for the series being “The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.” The second novel in the series, “This Shattered World”, will be published later this year. Balfour’s thoughts are that “television is the perfect format to take the characters from this world and put them on a screen. You couldn’t do it as a movie, since there wouldn’t be enough time to watch the metamorphoses of these characters”. I personally think this would have made a better movie though. Yes, TV would provide a longer chance to develop the story, but maybe too long? Don’t get me wrong, I loved this book! It was one of my favorite reads from last year (although I have to begrudgingly admit that I only recently found out that the series follows different characters- that makes me sad and less eager to read the next books, honestly. But I will!). The huge majority of this story takes place with the two main characters, Lilac and Tarver, crossing the harsh terrain of a foreign planet that they’ve crash landed on. It’s told from their alternating POV and the strong point of this story is watching these characters, as they develop personally, and as their relationship grows. But that’s what most of it is, dialogue between the two of them and a lot of internal debate (they go through long periods of time giving each other the silent treatment). I was absolutely impressed that a novel, which only features two people for most of the story, and where nature is the biggest threat, could be so entertaining! That said, I really think this would have made a better movie. The special effects could have been killer (not that they won’t be on TV- I’m just assuming they’ll be working with a smaller budget). It just boils down to whether this story could have been told better in a 200 minute movie rather then over hours in a TV series. I’ll watch it either way and always get excited about my favorite book characters coming to life on screen.

Maze Runner- We’ve got a new image from the Maze Runner movie, thanks to the MTV movie brawl! Who’s getting excited about this movie!?

Maze Runner

The Giver- We also got our first look at Jeff Bridges movie “The Giver”, an adaptation he’s been trying to make for over 20 years! Thanks to Harvey Weinstein we’ll finally get to see it. I just can’t wait to see all of these wonderful actors portray this story (I just LOVE Meryl Streep!)!

Vampire Academy: Thanks to Page to Premiere, we got a sneak peek of some juicy Dimitri stills before the movie comes out! (Just days away people)!

Movie Monday- James Frey’s Mega Book-Movie Deal, Vampire Academy to Hit Theaters Early and Much More!

In this weeks Movie Monday- Three new movies head to the big screen- Fae, by Colet and Jasmine Abedi, The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and Endgame by James Frey. Vampire Academy and The Seventh Son get new release dates while Allegiant’s release date is confirmed. The Silver Chair will be the next film in the Narnia franchise. Plus, DVD release dates for The Book Thief and Enders Game and more. For a full list of 60+ YA books heading to Hollywood, check out our post here!

1004598_700095436682797_809081775_nFae Trilogy: British director Ridley Scott has optioned the film rights to Fae, a YA trilogy written by sisters Colet and Jasmine Abedi (AKA- C.J Abedi). The first book, which was released July 2013, has apparently had some brag-worthy digital success as well as loads of social media support. The story follows Caroline Ellis, who, on her sixteenth birthday, sets into motion a series of events that have been fated for centuries; a battle between the Dark and Light Fae. Scott and Giannina Facio will produce the film, which is meant to be a hit among fans of the Twilight Saga. The 2nd book is complete and will be released this May.

james_freyEndgame: The newest YA book to be added to the list of upcoming adaptations is James Frey’s latest teen novel Endgame, which ended up landing him a 2 million dollar book-film deal with Fox and sister company Harper Collins. Frey is perhaps best known for his partially fabricated memoir A Million Little Pieces, as well as his other YA book that was adapted into the film I Am Number Four (part of the Lorien Legacies Series). In this monstrous deal (some might even say over-eager), Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton will write a dystopian, Hunger Games-esque, trilogy, first of which is to be published on October 7, 2014. Foreign publishers are already lined up as well for a simultaneous release around the world in over 30 languages. As for the movie deal, the first will be based on “Endgame: The Calling”, the first book in the series, with Twilight Saga producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill producing and Frey penning the script. Google has also mysteriously been involved in this deal- their Niantic Labs will publish six Endgame novels for the Google Play store, with the game launching on Android and iOS devices late next year. This is a massive deal for James Frey and a little shocking I might add- if memory serves, I am Number Four wasn’t a box office smash (hence the absent sequel). And I don’t think I’m the only one confused about this deal- social media has been lit up with negative responses to the knock-off similarities between Frey’s series and Hunger Games. Check out the story synopsis here.

imagesThe Red Queen: And here we have yet another YA series to get scooped up before the book is even released. The Red Queen, by 22 year-old debut author Victoria Aveyard, is the first book in an upcoming trilogy that has been sold in 16 languages, but won’t be released until sometime in 2015. Universal has so much faith in the series that they went ahead and optioned the film rights and have Breaking Bad writer Gennifer Hutchinson on board to pen the script. The series was pitched as Graceling meets The Selection, as well as Divergent meets Game of Thrones. It takes place in a fantasy world where all citizens are divided by the color of blood. The story follows a 17 year old girl who must pretend to be a long lost princess, in order to save her family and perhaps save the world. I am intrigued.

The Seventh Son: Sad news for fans of Joseph Delaney’s bestselling MG novels (The Last Apprentice Series)! For the 3rd time now, the movie release date has been changed! The movie, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and Ben Barnes was originally slated for February 2013, then pushed back to October 2013, then again to January of this year and now they’ve announced that it won’t be released until February, 2015! That’s a 2 year span of date changes, which is so strange seeing as they’ve already finished filming the movie. The decision has something to do with the movie being handed over from Warner Bros. to Universal and then the Universal- Legendary merger. If you want to go ahead and get excited, check out the official theatrical trailer here (I’m not going to lie, it looks AWESOME!!)!

the-silver-chairThe Chronicles of Narnia: Speculation about the Narnia franchise has been all over the place for some time now- some people thought it was finished (the film rights have bounced from studio to studio) and those who had not lost faith were certain that the next film was going to be The Magician’s Nephew (because they had basically said as much). Have no fear- official word is in and they are moving ahead with the fourth film in the franchise, which will be The Silver Chair! Screenplay writer David Magee, who has an Academy Award nomination for his work on Life of Pie, will pen the script.

20131112-143144Divergent- The countdown begins; Divergent, perhaps the most anticipated YA movie of the year, is just around the corner! That might be why all three titles recently took the top three spots on USA Today’s bestseller list, or maybe it’s just because they’re that good. If you haven’t read them yet, you should! We won’t bore you with more photos and movie stills (they’re on every fan and social media site out there these days- but if somehow you’ve managed to miss all the hype, just click any of the links here). Rather, we just wanted to let you know that the latest news: Allegiant (the 3rd and final book in the series) has gotten it’s official release date; March 18th, 2016. This confirms Lionsgate’s confidence in the franchise and has many people wondering why they aren’t going with the trend of breaking the final book into two films. Some believe it’s just a prudent move on Lionsgate’s part, opting to wait and see just how successful Divergent is before committing to a final, fourth installment. Yet there are plenty of others out there that are predicting the movie’s failure- and last month’s announcement that director Neil Burger won’t be returning for the second film brings it’s own share of doubts. But while Burger won’t be directing Insurgent, due to production schedule conflicts, he will serve as an executive producer for the big-budget sequel. The budget for Divergent still hasn’t been confirmed, but best guesses put it in the 80 million dollar range.

_1389972352Vampire Academy- The release date for Vampire Academy has been moved up! Originally slated for Valentine’s Day weekend, the movie will now hit theaters February 7th and two new promo clips have been released! Universal also revealed that the official soundtrack, which includes music from artists like Katy Perry, Goldfrapp, Sky Ferreira and more, will hit stores February 11th (lets see if they don’t move that date up as well). Tons of hype behind this YA bestselling adaption have flooded the internet, including these two new movie stills and this one, with tons of fang. If you haven’t seen the theatrical trailer yet, check it out here. You might be surprised! There’s loads of people out there that think this is the movie that will make vampires cool again. What do you think?

Maze Runner- The first movie stills are coming in! And we’re getting so excited! Check out these surprises and behind the scene thoughts from author James Dashner.

367960_062The Book Thief- Ohhh, sadly most of us missed this one due to its limited theatrical release [and have been drooling ever since, over the rock star reviews of Sophie Nélisse’s performance]. So good news for us! As soon as March gets here, we can all watch it! The official DVD release date is March 11th, and if you’re like me and haven’t seen this yet, I’d say it’s probably worth renting! Sure, it’s not meant to be as good as the book (are they ever?!) but I’m excited to see this young actress shine!

chloe_grace_moretz-wide__spanIf I Stay- Chloe Grace Moretz, at only 16 years old, will earn 7 figures for her role in If I Stay! Whoa, jealous much?! A whopping half a million dollars! The film should hit theaters this August- Here’s to seeing if she’ll stand up to that price tag… (I personally LOVED her in Kick Ass).

Enders PosterEnder’s Game- The movie, which hit theaters last November, only did mediocre in the box office, earning a mere $112 million from a budget of $110 million. Of course this hasn’t stopped the buzz about whether there will be a sequel (which Legendary hasn’t greenlit yet), or potentially a TV series. The latest word is that, more than likely, if there ever was a follow up, it would be an original story and not based on the 2nd book in Orson Scott Card’s series. Why you ask? Director Gavin Hood suggests it’s because Speaker of the Dead takes place 30 years after the first book and Ender would be a grown man. It might make more sense to add some steps in between. The DVD is scheduled to be released February 11th!

Bone Season: The Bone Season, by Samantha Shannon (a 21-year-old student currently pursuing a degree in English literature at Oxford University) is the first volume in a seven-book series. It has already been sold in 18 countries, and the film rights have been snapped up by The Imaginarium Studios, led by Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings) and Jonathan Cavendish (producer of Bridget Jones’ Diary). In terms of the book, this recent debut has been crowned as this fall’s candidate for Most Likely to Succeed [as the next Hunger Games], and topping almost everybody’s top book pick list. I’s been pegged as a dark, dystopic, featuring a teenage girl standing in opposition to a corrupt dictatorship. Here’s the synopsis: 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. She works as an envoy between secret cells: she drops in and out of people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant, and in her world — the world of Scion — she commits high treason simply by breathing. It is raining the day her life changes forever. Attacked, kidnapped and transported to Oxford, a city that has been kept secret for two hundred years, she meets Warden, a Rephaite with dark honey skin and heavy-lidded yellow eyes. He is the single most beautiful and frightening thing she has ever laid eyes on — and he will become her keeper.

encyclopedia_brown_boy_detectiveEncyclopedia Brown: With a wave of nostalgia, this past June, Warner Bros. finalized its acquisition of the movie rights to an adaptation of the cherished children’s book series, Encyclopedia Brown. Written by Donald J. Sobol, “Encyclopedia Brown” tells the story of an intelligent young man named Leroy Brown who acts as a detective, solving cases in his small town. The first book in the series, “Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective,” was released in 1963, with Sobol penning close to 30 “Encyclopedia Brown” books over the next five decades. Little is known about the adaptation so far except that producers Roy Lee and Howard David Deutsch are now searching for writers to turn author Donald J. Sobol’s books into a film and hopefully a franchise.

warner_bros_developing_the_lost_years_of_merlin_The Lost Years of Merlin: A few years ago Warner Bros. acquired the rights to T.A. Barron’s novel and they just recently renewed and added two scribes to adapt the story! In the wake of the Harry Potter Franchise, Warner Bros seems eager to find the next big thing to appeal to the younger audience, and this might just be the prize. Game of Thrones scribe, Dave Hill, alongside David Farr from Hanna, will adapt this epic five book series, which was first released in 1996 and is based on the infamous wizard. However in this original story we follow Merlin’s journey as a young boy, washed on up the shores of Wales, with no memory and no home, as he grows into a young man learning to use his powers to become the defender of the natural world and mentor to King Arthur. To learn more about this story and the process of turning it into a film, check out this author interview that Hypaple conducted with T.A Barron!

Celebrity-Closets-Taylor-Swift-Katie-HolmesThe Giver: We’ve got a release date for The Giver!! According to The Hollywood Reporter, on August 15, 2014 this wonderful dytopian novel, based on Lois Lowry’s international bestseller, will make its way to theaters. They also added a-listers Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift to the cast this week. Swift will play the Chief Elder, who is responsible for assigning tasks to the young, while Holmes will play the mother of Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), the young boy at the center of the utopian tale. They join the all-star cast that includes, Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites, will tell the story of a society in which there is no conflict, racism or sickness. With a budget of about $25 million, the film is being produced by Nikki Silver of TonikProductions along with Neil Koenigsberg and Bridges. Vadim Perelman wrote the adapted script; Michael Mitnick penned the latest draft. Filming just recently began in South Africa.

david-baldacci-author-photoThe Finisher: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has optioned the rights to David Baldacci’s upcoming fantasy novel, The Finisher. The story follows a 14-year-old girl who lives in a village called Wormwood, which is surrounded by a forest that is full of monsters. Matt Tolmach is producing the project and Scholastic, who is publishing Baldacci’s first stand-alone children’s book, won’t release it until March 2014.

Gilbertson-News-618x400Fallen: The newest cast member announced! According to Examiner, Harrison Gilbertson has joined the cast of the movie adaptation of Lauren Kate’s best-selling YA novel Fallen. Kate recently announced that Gilbertson would be playing Cam in the movie. He joins previously announced cast members Addison Timlin as Luce and Jeremy Irvine as Daniel. Filming on the movie is expected to begin this month and the story follows teenage fallen angels who are duking out an age-old battle between good and evil.

Movie Monday- 7 New YA Movies on the Way!!

For this week’s Movie Monday, we’re introducing 7 new books that we’ll be adding to our list of 60+ upcoming YA Adaptations! There are some awesome sounding books on this list! Which story are you most excited about? Do you have any fan casting ideas!? Let us know!

The 5th WaveThe Fifth Wave: The Fifth Wave, Rick Yancey’s bestselling alien evasion novel has been picked up by Sony Pictures and is moving full speed ahead! The studio, with producers Graham King and Tobey Maguire, have already named Susannah Grant to pen the script (Erin Brockovich) and is in talks with J Blakeson, who gained notoriety with his 2009 cult hit “The Disappearance Of Alice Creed”. The studio is hoping that this big hit novel, which already has fans begging for a follow up, will be there next big franchise.

Panic_HC_JKT_des4.inddPanic: Bestselling author Lauren Oliver’s upcoming book Panic has been optioned to become a movie by Universal after a bidding war last month. The book won’t be published until March next year, and is about a small town in which seniors take part in a dangerous and deadly game where the stakes are high and the payoff even higher. Marc Platt will produce the project for Universal, which is keeping plot details under wraps.

The Young WorldThe Young World- This past June a heated bidding war took place , which resulted in Warner Bros. securing the yet-to-be-published rights to The Young World. This is the first book in an original trilogy of post-apocalyptic YA novels by filmmaker-turned-novelist Chris Weitz. The movie deal came less than 15 months after Weitz’s signed his first book deal, which Little Brown will publish in 2014. Perhaps both the publishing and film industry have high hopes for the director of Twilight: New Moon and The Golden Compass adaptations. Weitz will adapt, direct and produce his story which is about teenage survivors who inherit a destroyed and desolate earth, after a cataclysmic event kills off every person not between the ages of 12 and 21. Without water, heat or any of the things they’ve grown up with, they must figure out how to save the world.

Fire Sermon

The Fire Sermon- A few months ago, Dreamworks snagged the rights to The Fire Sermon, the first book in a trilogy written by short story author and poet Francesca Haig. Deadline reports the plot of the book as such: 400 years after a nuclear apocalypse, society is left without technology and all humans are twins. One of each pair is physically perfect, and they are called Alphas, while the other, the Omega, bears some mutation. The apartheid society forces the mutated twins to settlements, even though when one twin dies, so does the other. This is the relationship between a brother and sister twin, and what happens when he becomes a leader in the repressed society.

gallagher girlsGallagher Girls Book Series: Ally Carter (which is the pen name for author Sarah Leigh Fogleman) has another adaptation in the works! The six-book young-adult series centers on a student, Cammie Morgan, at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women in Roseville, Va. While the school poses as an institution for highly intelligent girls, it’s actually a training facility for the CIA. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver, operating under their new Tonik Productions banner, have optioned film rights to the book series with an eye toward establishing a big-screen franchise. They are also currently working on another YA adaption, The Giver, which is currently being filmed in South Africa.

Children of ParanoiaChildren of Paranoia: This Young Adult thriller, the first part of a trilogy about a secret war that’s been waged for centuries, follows a young assassin who falls in love with a woman who calls into question the world as he knows it. As he desperately fights to uncover the elusive truth behind the conflict, he begins to wonder which side he’s really on — good or evil. CBS Films have bought the rights to Trevor Shane’s debut novel, and already have Battlestar Galactica‘s, Mark Verheiden on board to write the screenplay as well as producer Akiva Goldsman through his Weed Road banner.

elusion__130730232816-275x415Elusion: A few months ago Deadline let us know that Silver Reel and FlynnPictureCo have preemptively closed a deal for screen rights to Elusion, an upcoming young-adult novel written by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam that is to be the first in a two-book series. Elusion is a contemporary sci-fi thriller about two love-struck teenagers who discover that the wildly popular game created by their wunderkind best friend, which uses deep hypnosis to transport users to a virtual alternate world, is actually much more sinister than it appears. It visits territory covered in Inception and Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind. The first book is set to come out March 2014 and the second sometime in 2015.

Movie Monday- Goosebumps, Heist Society, If I Stay News and More!

Woah! There’s some exciting movie updates for you this week! We’ve got some news for you about the adaptations of Goosebumps, City of Ashes, Heist Society, If I Stay, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Seventh Son and Chaos Walking. NEXT WEEK we’re going to take a look at NINE adaptations in the works, including The 5th Wave, that we’re adding to our list of 60+ YA Book-to-Movies!

Goosebumps- The long in-development live-action movie based on R.L. Stine’s popular horror series Goosebumps is finally taking some major steps towards production- Jack Black is now in negotiations to star in the film, which is set to be directed by Rob Letterman. If it all works out, the film will have Black playing the role of a “Stine-like author,” which presumably means that the movie will primarily focus on young-adult horror.

Mortal Instruments Delayed [Indefinitely?]- If you haven’t yet heard, as we feared/suspected, TMI has been put on hold. Constantin Film has issued a release announcing that they have indefinitely postponed principal photography on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes. They also noted-“pushing back the start of production of City of Ashes was a decision we did not take lightly,” and that “after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place”. We already knew that the weak turn-out would probably result in this, but it’s still sad nonetheless. I’ve spoken to many friends who enjoyed the film (even those who have not read it yet). We’re still a bit foggy about the massive negative reception that this adaption has received (both of us feeling like there’s way worse examples with better $$$ digits). Cassandra Clare opened up for the first time about this delay recently, and she seems to be quiet optimistic about the future of this franchise. I guess we’ll see.

If I Stay- Gayle Forman’s novel, “If I Stay” centers around 17-year-ol Mia (to be played by Chloe Moretz) a talented cellist whose entire family is killed in a horrific car crash. Mia’s left comatose, but her soul is very much awake—and struggling with whether she should live without her family or join them in death. To make a long story short- a big part of this decision weighs on her next most important human companion, the love of her life, boyfriend Adam. So yes yes, we’re finally here- fans of this book hold on to your pants- we’ve got exiting news!!! We’ve learned who will play Adam- “Snow White and the Huntsmanactor Jamie Blackley has landed the role opposite Chloe Moretz. If that wasn’t happy news enough for all of you “If I Stay junkies- they’ve also cast Mia’s fire-cracker best friend Kim, who will be played by the gifted Liana Liberato.

Chaos Walking- We may have a director people, which is great news!! The Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (“Flight”) is in negotiations to direct Lionsgate’s latest young-adult sci-fi movie “Chaos Walking”. They also have another Oscar-winning person on board, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman will pen the script. The story is set in a dystopian future where humans have colonized a distant Earth-like planet. When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes and chaos ensues, leading a corrupt autocrat to threaten to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race. This is still the earliest parts of development, but bringing a director on board is definitely a good start

Seventh Son Release Date Pushed Back- Phew, what a whirl wind these dates have been. This was announced a few weeks ago but we’re just getting around to letting you guys know! But let’s just assume that all these date changes mean that it’s going to be epic now =p Ahh, I wish- but the truth is these delays aren’t about “making the movie better”! Variety now reports that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have decided to part ways rather than extend their distribution and co-financing partnership, and it’s believed that this may have contributed to The Seventh Son‘s release being delayed once more, this time to January 17th, 2014. Delays like this aren’t the best of signs, but at least the delay isn’t due to a need to finish making the film; production wrapped about a year ago. The film was originally slated for a February 15th, 2013 release, but, as you may have noticed, February came and went without The Seventh Son. Then in May 2012, the release date was set back to October 18th, 2013, and we started seeing the first images of the movie, giving us a look at stars Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes and Julianne Moore. Now we’ll just have to wait and hope that this film actually makes it to theaters early next year!

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children- Back in June they announced that Miss P’s got a release date!! That means it’s really on it’s way- Yay! So go ahead an mark your calendars, even though it’s going to be a bit of a wait, it’s never too soon to get excited for July 31st 2015! That’s when this quirky story should find it’s way to your local cinema. The movie’s director, Tim Burton, who has been attached to the project for quite awhile now, is known for bizarre, quirky movies like Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride. Jane Goodman, who has worked on movies like The Woman in Black and X-Men: First Class, is writing the script. The 2011 novel follows teenager Jacob, who begins to explore the ruins of the titular home, located on an island near Wales, and learns more about the children who lived there and why they were separated from society. Eerie photographs are interspersed with the text.

Heist Society- We haven’t heard much about the big-screen adaptation of Ally Carter’s “Heist Society” since news broke way back in July 2011 that Drew Barrymore would be producing the project through her Flower Films banner. Now, nearly two years later, we have an update… and a change of hands. In late June, the movie rights for the novel were acquired by Lionsgate on behalf of Brownstone Productions, a joint venture with “Hunger Games” star Elizabeth Banks and her husband Max Handelman (otherwise known as the duo who brought you “Pitch Perfect”). The adaptation will be based on Ally Carter’s bestseller about a woman who has been part of a larcenous family and tries to go straight. That ends when her father is suspected of stealing a mobster’s art collection and she and a friend have two weeks to steal back the artwork and get it back to the mobster. At this point Elizabeth Banks is only on board to produce, but it’s great news that this adaptation is getting some momentum.

The Book Thief- Take a look at the first official Movie Poster- What do you think? Have you read it? Will you see it? And for an interesting read, check out this dude’s thoughts on the whole thing!
